Cellphone/Personal Electronics Policy
P771K will be a distraction free school in accordance with NY State Law. P771K will uphold Chancellor's Regulation A-413, as students are not permitted to use personal internet-enabled electronic devices during the school day. This includes devices such as cell phones, laptops, tablets, and portable music and entertainment systems.
Parental Contact and Communication
- Parents may contact their child through contacting the site at _______________ or by contacting our Parent Coordinator, Janasia Thompson at 718-891-3600.
- Out-going calls can be made from all site main offices.
- All parents will have a copy of class schedules provided by teachers and if phone calls are necessary they are highly suggested during lunch periods.
- For non-emergencies, parents may also reach their child’s teacher through REMIND app and request contact. Please note that contact in this regard may not be immediate due to on-going instruction.
Collection and return of electronic devices
- Upon arrival from the school bus, students will begin the routine of handing their phone to the Unit Coordinator, Crisis Teacher and Assistant Principal.
- Cellphones are to be turned off when handed in. They will then be labeled and secured in a phone locker.
- Onsite storage is available and mandated by P771K as cellphones will be collected, labeled and stored using a Luxor Phone Locker. Each compartment has a number and that will be your child’s number for the school year.
- Student backpacks are not an acceptable storage option.
- Student desks are not an acceptable storage option.
- Inclusion students will follow the general education storage systems and will be provided with the same storage location as their peers.
- Students will receive their devices at approximately 2:30pm during the dismissal time.
- All afterschool programs, special events, and school related activities will follow the policy that is in place during the school day.
Exceptions:
- Only students who utilize a phone as a glucose monitor as per their 504 will be permitted to have a cellphone as a medical necessity.
- Students may not their medical device to text, take pictures, or to taunt peers who do not have access to their phones. These phones must be kept in a pocket or personal bag worn at all times.
Parent/Teacher Responsibility
- All parents are urged to review and uphold the school expectations as outlined in this policy.
- All teachers are to review the expectations for arrival and ensure that students receive their items from designated staff member.
- Teachers will uphold parental requests for contact during the school day and appoint a staff member to take a student to the office.
- All outgoing calls will be logged.
Violation of Policy
- The student will receive one verbal warning to return their device to the designated adult for collection. Parent/Guardian will be called to be made aware of the incident.
- If the student violates the policy two times, the device will be confiscated and kept in the locker. The device will be returned at dismissal.
- If the student is in violation of the policy three times, the device will be confiscated and the parent/guardian will come up to retrieve the device from the site main office.
- Students who use cellphones or personal electronics in violation of the DOE’s Discipline Code, school policy and Chancellor’s Regulation A-413 will be subject to discipline in accordance with the guidance interventions and disciplinary responses set forth in the discipline code. The discipline code also prohibits students from taking unauthorized photos/video recordings of others (A21/B19).
If Lost or Stolen
• In the unlikely event that an electronic device is stolen or damaged at school, parents can submit a claim to the Comptroller’s Office. More information on submitting a claim is available on the Comptroller’s webpage
